The science supporting Pilates for low back pain
If you’re living with chronic low back pain, movement is one of the most effective treatments available and Pilates is leading the way. A major review published in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, with more than 9,700 participants across 118 studies, found that Pilates was the most effective exercise approach for reducing both pain and disability. Rather than strengthening muscles alone, Pilates improves confidence in movement, restores healthy functional patterns and reduces the unhelpful muscle guarding that often accompanies persistent pain.
At The Pilates Nook, we take a gradual, individualised approach to improving low back pain. We begin with gentle mobility and low-load strengthening exercises that improve joint congruency, muscular control and body awareness. As your confidence and capacity grow, exercises are progressed to build the strength you need to support you in your everyday life, recreation and sport.
Our goal is to help you move with greater ease and confidence. If you’re experiencing ongoing back pain, we recommend starting with an initial assessment (if you are new to us) and a set of private or duet sessions so we can tailor a program to your specific needs.
